THE WHOLE EARTH -California and the Disappearance of the Outside at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin curated by Anselm Franke and Diedrich Diedrichsen.

Pit Schultz in discussion with Anselm Franke, Avery Gordon and Brian Kuan Wood. The topics range from hippie cultures, political movements and Californian subcultures to what it all means today for aesthetical and political practice. The exhibition and conference of "The whole earth" are dedicated to the story of the image of the “blue planet” which has become one of the most influential images in history. It will critically explore the application of ecological-systemic concepts to society, politics, and aesthetics. The transformation of romantic and technophile ideas from the realm of counterculture and cybernetics led to concepts of the system and self-management in network capitalism that have a global impact today.

Anselm Franke is the Artistic Director of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and co-curator of The Whole Earth Exhibition and conference.

Avery Gordon is a Professor of Sociology at the University of California/Santa Barbara and Visiting Faculty Fellow at Goldsmiths’ Centre for Research Architecture/London. Her work focuses on radical thought and practice. She writes about imprisonment, war, and dispossession.

Brian Kuan Wood is a writer based in New York. He is editor of e-flux journal.

The Whole Earth In The Ether is an acoustic companion series to the Whole Earth exhibition and conference that bring the work and discussions around the legacy of the California counterculture to the airwaves.The series includes talks, discussions, a workshop, conference recordings and culminates with a final broadcast dedicated to the conference.
